So Sven was going on about furries, again.
Oh no, did he hit up a convention?
Yeah for work. But it got me thinking.
Oh no.
Well if people like to wear fursuits around they’re furries, right?
That they are.
What about other types of animal?
Like fish?
Sure, like fish! Are people who like to dress up like fish also furries or do they have their own name?
You know, I’m not sure.
Or shellfish? Would shellfish be different from the fish people or the same?
I knew a woman…
Who liked to dress up as a shellfish?
Liked it? No. But had to work. Not in a furry sort of way, but as a promotional thing. As a lobster.
She had to dress up like a lobster to promote something?
Yup!
Wow, all right. That’s a tale of strange woe, but it doesn’t help us now.
Well I don’t know what they call themselves.
I’m just wondering, is all.
What about frogs? Are they different too? Where do you draw the lines?
No idea! How about lizards. Maybe they’d be Godzilla fans, too.
No I know what lizard people call themselves.
You do? You know what people who like to dress up as big foam lizards call themselves.
Yup.
Enlighten me.
Lizbians.
No way!
Yup.
No!
It’s true. Lizbians.
That is not true! It can’t be true! You’re just making that up.
Well, yes. But they should call themselves lizbians, shouldn’t they?
They totally should. Man that’s just wrong.
But glorious!
I do not deny the glory of your crazy.
Lizbians!

Scalies is a term I have heard used by folk who identify as part (or all) reptilian in nature. Not sure about fish or amphibians. Will ask next time I go to a Furry Club meeting.

Do let us know.

Ha!
Someone (probably Juliana, Laszlo, or Alana) dubbed people dressing up as crustaceans “Crusties” after that whole thing. I never checked that for accuracy, though.

CRUSTIES! That was it.

Um, yeah, that was me. Juliana and I were in collusion for blindsiding the editors over at http://thefootnote.net by mentioning the “Crusty” phenomenon separately in our articles — which wasn’t noticed until the posts went live because we had different editors.
I’ve always been a bit afraid to check for accuracy.
