I think I need to start a garden.
Where are you going to plant things? You live on the 5th floor of a building!
Where everyone, I mean, you’ve seen… come on.
A fire escape garden?
Yeah!
Natasha! Those are dangerous!
No they aren’t.
Uhm, yes they are! What if there’s a fire?
The plants are already outside, and how would they catch fire, anyway?
Natasha!
Melina, dearling, listen. If there is a fire then there is and the fire escape can still be used.
Uh-huh. How? With plants blocking it?
Kick them aside?
Onto the ground, five stories below, where they can hit people who just escaped from a burning building?!
I will admit to not having thought of that.
Thank you!
But where else can I have a tiny garden?
Get some hanging windowsill pots? Hang them outside the other windows?
Those are never big enough to grow good things.
Well that’s the price you pay for living in New York…
But it is a price I do not wish to pay.
Do you have roof access?
I could acquire it, yes! Yes! I shall turn the roof into the Garden of Eden.
Less casual nudity, perhaps.
Or more!
Oh, Natasha.
For seriously, however, yes, a roof garden would be better, and bigger.
And less dangerous for everyone involved.
Truth’s.
So whatcha’ gonna plant?
Trees.
You wouldn’t have been able to plant trees on a fire escape anyway!
I like apple tress!
Apple trees will not work on a roof!
Seriously, no?
Seriously no!
Then what can I plant that is worth time?
Tomatoes, or basil or you know, smaller plants. Not things with giant root systems! Like trees!
This is sounding less good.
It’ll be fun! I’ll help you plant some pretty flowers!
All right.
And we plant peppers!
Peppers would be good.
See, much better than a tiny fire escape garden.
No trees though.
No, no roof trees.
Hmph.

Which reminds me. I have to plant mine again this year. Crawling out the bedroom window to the neighboring roof!

Hm. Roof trees might help with those annoying noisy upstairs neighbors… eventually…

What about small trees in big pots?
May 12th, 2010 on 8:01 pm

Seed catalogues sell tiny dwarf fruit trees that you can keep in a pot in your living room. No apples though, mostly citrus. And bananas.

Citrus? Does that mean they have orange trees? (I LOVE orange blossom)

Yes! four-foot-tall orange trees that grow full-sized oranges! Or lemons, limes or kiwifruit. It’s mind-bogglingly cool. If you’re really enthusiastic about growing your own stuff.
